Granada will develop low emission areas

Granada City Council has started a plan for the development of 450 hectares of low-emission areas, giving priority to pedestrians, personal mobility systems and public transport.

The goal is to make the Nasrid city “emission-free and a healthier place to live”. Granada is in the top 3 of the most polluting cities in Spain.

According to official health data, 35,000 people suffer from asthma in Granada, of which 2,000 are under the age of 10. In 2019, 4,700 citizens suffered from cerebrovascular problems and 500 from lung cancer. All diseases closely related to pollution.

This low emission zone project is being developed gradually, starting with a zone I.

Any vehicle is allowed, but as in “Madrid Central”, only residents, loading and unloading, bicycles and electric vehicles can park.

It is delimited between the following neighborhoods San Juan de Dios, Emperatriz Eugenia, Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, Ribera del Genil including Albaicín and Sacromonte.

Zone IIwill have a “parking rotation”.

With an area of approximately one square kilometer with the goal of strengthening traditional trade.

He also emphasized that this plan fits within the “National Pollution Control Plan and Climate Change and Energy Transition Bill”for municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants, which must be developed before 2023.
