Marratxí Town Council, through its Sustainable Mobility department, has announced the launch of the first bicycle master plan in Mallorca with the aim of making Marratxí a more cycling-friendly municipality.
The mayor of Marratxí, Miquel Cabot, explained that this master plan is part of the government team’s commitment to the environment and sustainable and healthy mobility. “This master plan will be the roadmap that marks the necessary action lines to normalize and increase the use of the bicycle as a sustainable means of transport in the municipality”, he noted.
In a first phase, an assessment of the cycling situation in the municipality, the tracks and existing and planned cycle lane kilometres, parking facilities, intermodality and the integration of cycling in urban environments. The assessment will be complemented by citizen participation surveys and sectoral meetings to learn about the profiles and needs of users and the most common mobility habits among citizens.

Once the assessment has been made, a proposal will be made for actions to encourage cycling to be increasingly present on the streets of the municipality. The goal is to encourage Marratxiners to use bicycles as a means of daily transportand to promote mobility by cycling to schools, sports centres, workplaces and shops.
The goal of this plan is to lay the foundations to improve the cycling network and encourage Marratxiners to use bicycles for their journeys.
This plan will be developed in collaboration with Mobility by Cycling Friendly, a company specialised in the development of sustainable mobility plans and mobility solutions for institutions and companies. The company has thanked Marratxí Town Council for being a pioneer with this bicycle master plan in the Balearic Islands.
One of the plan’s axes is the promotion of cycling at the municipal level and the improvement of infrastructures so that all the cores of Marratxi are connected by bike lanes, improve the cycling signage, and the creation of a safe parking networkto encourage the use of cycling at educational, commercial and sporting levels. “If there is a wide range of cycle lanes and safe parking facilities, this modal distribution that we have now is due to private vehicles totally unsustainable, and if more bicycles are used, the municipality of Marratxí will be more sustainable”., stated Juan Antonio Lobón, operations director of Mobility by Cycling Friendly.
On the other hand, the deputy mayor for Urban Planning and Sustainable Mobility, Joan Francesc Canyelles, explained that this master plan will determine the shortcomings of the municipality on sustainable mobility and cycling in order to open a new era in sustainable mobility in Marratxí.
